Year: 1997 (70th) Academy Awards
Category: Short Film (Live Action)
Film Title: Visas and Virtue
Winner: Chris Tashima, Chris Donahue
Presenter: Matt Damon, Ben Affleck
Date & Venue: March 23, 1998; Shrine Auditorium & Expo Center
CHRIS DONAHUE:
I think the real hero tonight is Mr. Sugihara, who risked so much to write visas. He risked his life and his future and his family because he recognized human dignity. I'd like to thank my family, my mother and father and brothers and sisters, my Jesuit brothers in East L.A., Diana, and Chris, who wrote, directed, and acted.
CHRIS TASHIMA:
I hope we can begin to embrace every race. Diversity is the ingenue. She's the true American star and she's ready for her close-up. Tim Toyama, you should be holding this right now. Mom and Dad, thank you for giving me the freedom to dream. Thank you.
