Year: 1973 (46th) Academy Awards

Category: Music (Original Dramatic Score)

Film Title: The Way We Were

Winner: Marvin Hamlisch

Presenter: Henry Mancini, Cher

Date & Venue: April 2, 1974; Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

MARVIN HAMLISCH:
Thank you, Cher. [Jokingly pronounces her name "Sheer"]

CHER:
[Laughing:] Ah, okay.

HENRY MANCINI:
[Jokingly to Hamlisch:] Cheer up.

MARVIN HAMLISCH:
Cheer up, right. What can I tell you? My piano teacher is thrilled about this, I know. She kept saying, "Practice, practice." To Ray Stark, Sydney Pollack, to Barbra Streisand, a big, big thank you. I can say that right off the bat. There were a lot of people involved in the music of this and I'm glad I was one of them. And I can only tell you, last but not least, I want to thank the makers of Maalox for making this all possible. Thank you.

[Ed. note: In reading the names of the nominees prior to announcing the winner, Cher mistakenly says, "Marvin Hamshmisch." Mancini says, "Who? Who?" Cher turns to Mancini and says, "Hamelshmisch," to audience laughter. Mancini whispers the correct name in her ear and she says, "Hamlisch. Sorry about that, Marvin." She smiles and the audience laughs.]
